Spring 2012 schedule:
Meeting notes

Address

Center for Advanced Biotechnology

Boston University
Department of Biomedical Engineering
Attn: Douglas Densmore
36 Cummington St.
Boston, MA 02215, USA
Telephone: (617) 353-8500
Fax: (617) 353-8501

Detailed Directions:

  • Exit PHO 209, and turn right, walking towards the stairs in the central atrium.
  • Go down the stairs and turn right, around the stairs---you will pass the restrooms on your left---and turn left into the corridor. Follow the corridor and exit to Cummington Street.
  • Walk along the right sidewalk and take the first door into the building on the right. Turn left and walk to the vending machine.
  • U-turn to your right and take the pink stairs to the basement level. Turn left and walk along the corridor with yellow-cream walls and into The Green Pillar Tunnel, going through several doors.
  • At the end of the tunnel, walk on past the Unix Lab, until you see a "Cell and Biomolecular Mechanics Lab" on your left. Stop, retrace a couple of steps backward, and take the door on your right. Go up the stairs to the 3rd floor.
  • Exit the stairway, turn right and walk past the elevators, then left. Walk on past Jim Collins' office---you will pass his excellent gene-counter poster on your left---in the corridor as the corridor turns right.
  • You will see one---or if you're observant---two doors on your left, with a green chalkboard on the opposite wall. Take the second door, the one that is in an alcove. If you see ugly red-blue vinyl tiling on the floor, then you are on the right path. If you see stairs, then you are on the wrong path: retrace your steps backwards immediately and look for the second door in the alcove. Follow the instructions in this bullet point again.
  • Follow the corridor to its end. You will see a door on the left. (If you see elevators, look further to the left. If you see glass windows, look to your other left.) Go down one flight of stairs and open the door.
  • The CAB is on your right. Slide card to get in, or call someone to let you in using the phone on your right, or just knock. Be slow and cautious as you walk in: the CAB is a busy place with people and tables carrying spillable liquids representing hours or months of work.
  • Walk in through the CAB door and immediately turn left and slow down as you approach the main room. Verify that the corridor is clear and then proceed to your right. Stop at the bench near the robot depicted in this picture.
  • These instructions are invertible: reverse each instruction and follow them in the reverse order to return to the safety of PHO 209.
  • You can also use some of these instructions if you enter from the side door past 44 Cummington St. In this case, go up to the third floor, exit the staircase, and start following the above instructions from step 7.

Lab Safety Links

1. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) - http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/safety-center/msds-search.html

You should use this website to read up on any chemicals you use in the laboratory. MSDS provides important information about the chemicals we work with. In particular, MSDS provides information regarding any health risks associated with working with a particular chemical, the type of personal protection equipment (PPE) you should utilize when handling the chemical, as well as any other names the chemical may be known by. Hard copies for the chemicals we have in stock are also be available in the laboratory.

2. Lab Safety Training - http://www.bu.edu/orctraining/ehs/research-safety/lab-safety-training-schedule/

Please complete the lab safety training as soon as possible so the lab is in compliance with the BU Environmental Healthy and Safety Office.

3. Biological Waste Pickup Request - http://www.bu.edu/ehs/services/waste/biological-waste/crc-biological-waste-pickup-request/

This form will primarily be used by Traci when a Sharps or Biohazard container is full. In the event that a Sharps container or Biohazard box is full and Traci is away (conference/vacation/etc.), please close the Sharps container (slide black cover over the top of the red container) or Biohazard box (close each bag within the box with a single knot and tape the box shut with packing tape), then place the closed containers by the pick-up area (short hallway where the 4C room is located), then complete this form and send an email to Traci (thaddock@bu.edu) to inform her of the pick-up request submission.

Registry of Standard Biological Parts - http://partsregistry.org/Main_Page

This is the MIT registry of BioBrick parts. It has a lot of useful information on all of the parts they have available, as well as some excellent pages on material ranging from what BioBricks are to the actual assembly protocols people use in the Help section.

We will be attempting to recreate this system in our lab using BioBricks. A Synthetic Genetic Edge Detection System from Cell 2009
